Mission Health - Health for the Body, Mind, Soul & City

Isolation, inactivity, and a lack of green space have become a part of city life. Mission Health rethinks what it means to live healthily in the city, across physical, mental and urban spaces.

Physical Health: The project emphasizes physical well-being by incorporating a variety of active spaces: track, tennis, pickleball and basketball courts as well as indoor facilities to encourage residents and guests to stay active. Greenhouses and winter gardens are on each building and in the Interdisciplinary Greenhouse Complex, which is used for high-grade and large-scale production of natural and healthy vegetation.

Mental Health: To combat the loneliness epidemic and social isolation that we experience in modern-day cities, the design fosters lively social interactions. Instead of quiet, isolating corridors, Mission Health offers open plazas, squares, and broad streets that encourage people to gather, interact, and build community. The Southwest Corridor runs through the interior of the site, linking the city to the site and providing a canopy and safe area of travel.

Urban Health: The project also addresses the typical underutilization of urban buildings. Instead of being confined to a 9-5 schedule, Mission Health’s spaces are interdisciplinary and multi-use, where knowledge from different spheres is able to engage with each other and create an engaging and fulfilling environment around the clock. Mission Health also has commercial and office spaces throughout the site, allowing local residents to have flex spaces, and spaces to start their own businesses - ramen shops, cafes, barbershops, and authentic international cuisine to name a few. This continuous use not only maximizes the building’s utility but also keeps the area lively and safe.
